Some of their players in their early years, including Seán Rice, the doyen of these pages, played with Breaffy because they couldn’t get football with Castlebar. Set up in the shadow of parish rivals Castlebar Mitchels, who were to go on to win five Mayo SFC titles in a row later that year, Breaffy’s aims had to be modest by comparison. Reflecting on their first year as a club in 1953, it’s doubtful they were even dreaming of them. AS they warmed themselves beside the fire in Michael Golden’s house on a cold Tuesday night in February, 1954, the founding fathers of Breaffy GAA club were not talking about county senior finals.
